Waste Prevention and Recycling at the Office

Reduce

When you are using photocopiers and printers, print on both sides by default. Backup copies can be easily transferred to high capacity low cost removable media, such as compact discs or removable hard drives, and stored off-site. Backups can also be transferred over the internet for off-site storage. This way you’ll never loose documents to fire, flood or theft, and it saves paper.

The best way to reduce waste in the office is to not produce it in the first place. Before purchasing, make sure you definitely need to buy the goods or materials. Minimise the amount of waste you do produce by using items as many times as possible and recycling them once they have been reused.

Reuse

Reuse envelopes whenever possible. Some businesses do not like to send some types of mail in used envelopes to keep up corporate image. However, many businesses carry out a large proportion of mailing where corporate image is not necessary. For this type of mailing, sticky labels can cover the old address on the used envelopes.

Have each staff persons set aside paper that they use on only one side, so that it can be reused for other tasks.

Buy recycled toner cartridges, and send your spent toner cartridges to be recycled. This is often seen as recycling, but it is technically a form of reuse.

Recycle

When beginning a recycling program, decide which material you want to recycle, put recycling bins around your office, and get staff to participate. Local phone directories will have contact details for recycling companies who will pick up your recyclables.

And remember, you are not recycling if you send your waste to be recycled, but you do not buy products made from recycled content.
